How to Appear Offline on Steam

Source-checked About 10 minutes

Answer

In the Steam desktop client, select Friends & Chat, open the drop-down beside your avatar and profile name, then choose Invisible. Friends will see you as offline, but you can still use the Friends list and messages; choose Offline only if you want to sign out of the Steam Community and lose online-dependent Friends features.

Open Friends & Chat

Launch the Steam desktop client, confirm the intended account name at the top right, then select Friends & Chat in the lower-right corner. The separate Friends & Chat window or panel should open.

Open your presence menu

At the top-left of Friends & Chat, select the drop-down beside your avatar and profile name. Steam should show Online, Away, Invisible, Offline, and Do Not Disturb presence choices.

Choose Invisible

Select Invisible. Reopen the presence drop-down and confirm Invisible is selected; Steam says other players will see you as offline while you can still view friends and send or receive messages.

Use Offline for Friends disconnection

Choose Offline only when you want to sign out of the Steam Community. Valve notes that you will no longer be able to communicate with friends and Steam features that require an online presence will not work.

Return to Online when finished

Open the same drop-down beside your avatar and profile name, select Online, and confirm Friends & Chat reconnects. This reverses the Steam presence change without altering profile privacy or game settings.

Check the privacy boundary

Ask a trusted friend to check your Steam presence if the result matters. Invisible changes Steam Community presence; it does not change your profile privacy or a game's separate friend, party, or activity system.

If it does not work

  • If Friends & Chat does not open, confirm the Steam client is online and that its Friends service is connected before retrying the presence drop-down.
  • If a friend still sees activity inside a game, check that game's own presence or party controls; Steam's Invisible status does not document control over third-party in-game systems.
  • If you chose Offline accidentally, reopen the same presence drop-down and select Online to reconnect to Steam Friends.
