Share Your Live Location in WhatsApp

Open the intended chat

Check the person's name or the group title carefully. Everyone in a group can see a Live Location sent to that group.

Open Location

On iPhone, select the plus button beside the message box. On Android, select the paperclip. Then choose Location.

Allow location access if asked

Grant the location permission needed by WhatsApp. On iPhone, Live Location may require Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > WhatsApp > Always. On Android, check Apps > WhatsApp > Permissions > Location.

Choose live or fixed location

Select Share live location to keep updating your position for a limited time. Select Send your current location when the recipient needs only one fixed map point.

Choose a duration and send

Select the shortest useful duration, add an optional comment, and send. Check that the location card appears in the intended chat.

Stop sharing when finished

Open the location card and choose Stop sharing. You can also review active shares under WhatsApp Settings or Profile > Privacy > Live location.

If it does not work

  • If Location is missing or inaccurate, turn on the phone's Location Services and allow WhatsApp location access.
  • If Live Location does not update, check mobile data or Wi-Fi and disable battery restrictions that are preventing WhatsApp from updating in the background.
  • After Live Location stops or expires, the last map thumbnail can remain in the chat; it is no longer a continuously updating position.
