Turn Off Blue Check Marks in WhatsApp

Source-checked About 2 minutes

Answer

Open WhatsApp Settings > Privacy and turn off Read receipts. In one-to-one chats, other people will no longer see blue check marks when you read their messages, and you will no longer see theirs. Read receipts still apply in group chats, and turning them off also affects whether you can see who viewed your status.

Before you continue
  • Open PrivacyThe switch is in WhatsApp Settings, not the phone's Messages app.
  • Two-way changeYou lose other people's read receipts too.
  • Know the exceptionsGroup chats and status viewing behave differently.
Guide steps6 steps
  1. Open WhatsApp Settings
  2. Open Privacy
  3. Turn off Read receipts
  4. Understand the two-way effect
  5. Remember the group-chat exception
  6. Check the status effect
  7. If it still does not work

Open WhatsApp Settings

On iPhone, select Settings at the bottom. On Android, open the three-dot menu and select Settings.

Open Privacy

Choose Privacy. This page controls read receipts, status audience, and other visibility settings.

Turn off Read receipts

Find Read receipts and switch it off. The change affects ordinary one-to-one conversations.

Understand the two-way effect

You will not send blue read receipts in one-to-one chats, but you also will not receive them from other people.

Remember the group-chat exception

WhatsApp still sends read receipts in group chats. The switch does not provide the same hiding behavior there.

Check the status effect

With read receipts off, you cannot see who viewed your status, and other people cannot see that you viewed theirs. Turn the switch back on if you need those viewer lists.

If it does not work

  • If the switch is missing, update WhatsApp from the phone's official app store and restart it.
  • If a group message still shows that it was read, that is expected because group-chat read receipts remain active.
  • One gray check means sent, two gray checks mean delivered, and two blue checks normally mean read; a clock means the message has not left your phone yet.
