Recover Old WhatsApp Messages From an Android Backup
Source-checked About 15 minutes
Answer
On Android, sign in with the same phone number and Google account used for the backup, install WhatsApp from Google Play, verify the number, and choose Restore when the backup is found. A backup cannot be restored after skipping that setup prompt without reinstalling.
Confirm the backup identity
Use the same phone number and Google account that created the WhatsApp backup. A backup tied to another number or account will not be offered.
Install the official Android app
Install or reinstall WhatsApp from Google Play only after protecting any newer chats that are not in the older backup.
Verify the original phone number
Open WhatsApp, accept the terms, and verify the same number used for the backup. Grant the requested backup access when Android asks.
Restore when prompted
When WhatsApp finds the backup, review its date and size, tap Restore, and keep the phone online until messages finish restoring. Media can continue downloading afterward.
Handle a missing backup safely
Check that the correct Google account and number are active and that Google Drive or local backup data still exists. Do not overwrite a newer backup while investigating, and do not give credentials to recovery software.
