Change or Mute Instagram Notification Sounds on iPhone
Source-checked · About 10 minutes
Answer
Open Settings > Apps > Instagram > Notifications. If a Sounds row opens a picker, choose one of the sounds iOS offers; if Instagram shows only a Sounds switch, iPhone can enable or mute the app’s sound but cannot assign a different custom tone from that screen.
Open Settings, tap Apps, select Instagram, then tap Notifications. Turn on Allow Notifications before testing sound controls; if Notifications is missing, open Instagram once and allow its notification request first.
2
Inspect the Sounds control
Tap Sounds when it is a selectable row. Apple documents that a sound can be selected for some apps only, so the available interface is decisive: a picker permits a listed sound, while a switch only turns Instagram notification audio on or off.
3
Choose a listed sound or mute it
When iOS displays a sound list, select one and return to the Instagram notification screen. When there is no picker, use the Sounds switch to allow or silence Instagram; do not change Text Tone or Ringtone expecting those controls to replace a third-party app’s alert.
4
Keep the Instagram events you need
In Instagram, open profile > menu > Notifications and review which Instagram activities may notify you. These categories control which events create alerts; they do not guarantee that iOS will expose a separate custom tone for each event.
5
Verify with a real notification
Lock the iPhone and have a trusted account trigger an allowed Instagram notification. If the banner arrives silently, check Ring/Silent mode, alert volume, the active Focus, Scheduled Summary, and whether the Instagram Sounds control is enabled.
6
Accept the control shown by iOS
If Settings provides no sound picker for Instagram, there is no supported per-app custom-tone step to reveal. Avoid configuration profiles and automations claiming to replace another app’s protected notification sound; recheck after an iOS or Instagram update instead.

If it does not work
If Instagram is absent under Settings > Apps, install and open the official app, sign in, and respond to its notification permission request before checking again.
If notifications arrive but make no sound, verify Allow Notifications, Sounds, Ring/Silent mode, alert volume, Focus, and Scheduled Summary without repeatedly changing unrelated ringtone settings.
If a selected sound does not persist, restart the iPhone, install current iOS and Instagram updates, then return to the same Instagram Notifications screen to confirm what iOS saved.
