Turn Off Vanish Mode in an Instagram Chat

Open the one-to-one Instagram chat that is in Vanish Mode and swipe up from the bottom of the conversation again. Release when the interface indicates that Vanish Mode will turn off. The chat should return to its normal background. Vanish Mode is optional and may not be available on every account or in every region.

Open Instagram messages

Open Instagram and select the messages icon. Choose the one-to-one conversation that shows the Vanish Mode background.

Start at the bottom of the chat

Place your finger near the bottom edge of the conversation, below the latest visible message.

Swipe upward

Drag upward in one continuous motion. Keep holding until Instagram shows that releasing will turn off Vanish Mode.

Release the gesture

Lift your finger. The chat should return to its normal appearance.

Confirm normal mode

Scroll a short distance and make sure the Vanish Mode notice is gone. The setting applies to this conversation, not every chat.

Handle individual messages separately

Turning off the mode does not provide a bulk edit for ordinary messages. Use the message menu and Unsend only when you need to remove a message you sent.

If it does not work

  • If the swipe scrolls the chat, begin closer to the bottom edge and use a longer upward motion.
  • If Vanish Mode is not shown for the account or conversation, there is nothing to turn off there.
  • Instagram can notify the chat when someone takes a screenshot in Vanish Mode, so do not treat disappearing messages as a way to bypass another person's privacy.
