Manual hiding applies to comments on a post you shared. Open Instagram on iPhone or Android, switch to the account that published the post, and open its comments. Do not confuse hiding with reporting, restricting, blocking, or deleting; each action has different consequences.
2
Find the specific comment
Locate the comment you want to manage and check the username and thread context. If replies are involved, confirm which comment is selected. Instagram can also hide comments automatically through Hidden Words, so a comment may already be under a hidden-comments section.
3
Hide the comment
Tap Hide below the comment when Instagram displays that control. A manually hidden comment remains visible to you and to the person who wrote it, but other people cannot see it. Instagram does not notify the commenter merely because you hide the comment.
4
Verify its public visibility
View the post from another account or a signed-out context if the privacy setting permits it. Confirm the hidden comment is absent. Do not rely solely on the view from the posting account, because Instagram intentionally continues showing the hidden comment to you.
5
Unhide the comment when appropriate
Return to the post's comments, choose View hidden comments near the bottom when shown, and tap Unhide below the intended comment. The comment becomes visible to other viewers again; read it once more before restoring it.
6
Use stronger moderation only when needed
Hiding does not remove the comment or prevent new comments. For spam, harassment, or policy violations, consider deleting, reporting, restricting the account, blocking it, or configuring Hidden Words after reviewing what each option does. Preserve evidence before removing threatening content.
