Install osu! Beatmap Packs on a Mac

Source-checked About 10 minutes

Answer

For osu!(lazer), open downloaded `.osz` beatmap files and let osu! import them. For the older Wineskin client, opening `.osz` files is also preferred; manually copy extracted beatmap folders into the Songs folder only when import fails. Do not rename ZIP files to `.osz` unless they are valid osu! archives.

Before you continue
  • Know the clientosu!(lazer) and the older Wineskin app store data differently.
  • Open `.osz` filesosu! imports this format automatically.

  1. Identify the client
  2. Download from osu!

  4. Verify in song selection
  5. Import the remaining pack
  6. Use the Songs folder only for the older client

  8. If it still does not work

Identify the client

Open osu! and check whether it is osu!(lazer) or the older stable client running inside a Wineskin app.

Download from osu!

Sign in at osu.ppy.sh, open Beatmap Packs or a beatmap listing, and download the intended `.osz` files.

Import one file first

Double-click one `.osz` file or drag it onto the open osu! window. Wait for the import message.

Verify in song selection

Search for the imported artist or title. Play or preview it before importing the whole pack.

Import the remaining pack

Select the other `.osz` files and open them with osu! in reasonable groups so errors remain visible.

Use the Songs folder only for the older client

If a valid archive will not open, show the older `osu!.app` package contents and place the extracted beatmap folder in its Songs directory.

Refresh the older client

Press F5 in Song Select to reprocess beatmaps. Do not use F5 for a destructive collection rebuild unless the game warns you clearly.

If it does not work

  • If Finder shows `.zip`, extract it and inspect whether it contains `.osz` files rather than only renaming the extension.
  • If moving `osu!.app`, remember the older Mac package can contain all beatmaps and skins.
  • If a beatmap is missing, search by artist and title, then check the import error before downloading it again.
