Before downloading, compare the Mac's processor and macOS version with OpenAI's current requirements. Open Apple menu > About This Mac to identify them. The original tutorial's early-access message is obsolete; compatibility, organization policy, or account restrictions are more relevant if installation is unavailable now.

Download only from OpenAI
Go directly to chatgpt.com/download and choose the macOS download. Avoid community reposts, search advertisements, unofficial app stores, and similarly named installers. The downloaded file should come from OpenAI's official domain; stop if the browser redirects to an unfamiliar download host.
In Finder, open Downloads and double-click the ChatGPT disk image. If macOS displays a security prompt, verify that the app is identified as ChatGPT from OpenAI before continuing. Do not bypass Gatekeeper for an installer whose source or publisher cannot be confirmed.

Install ChatGPT in Applications
When the disk image opens, drag ChatGPT to the Applications folder as instructed. Wait for copying to finish, then eject the disk image. Launch the installed copy from Applications rather than repeatedly opening the app inside the downloaded disk image.

Launch and sign in
Open ChatGPT from Applications and complete the normal macOS confirmation if shown. Sign in using the intended ChatGPT account and approved authentication method. If the Mac is managed by an employer or school, installation or sign-in may require the organization's administrator.

Review permissions before granting them
ChatGPT may request notifications, microphone, camera, accessibility, or other macOS access when you use related features. Read each prompt and grant only what the feature needs. You can review permissions later in System Settings > Privacy & Security; installing the app does not require granting every optional permission.

Verify the installed app and keep it current
Open ChatGPT, confirm it can reach the service, and check the app menu for update behavior or version information. Remove the downloaded disk image after successful installation. If the app will not launch, recheck OpenAI's requirements and official guidance instead of installing a modified package.
