Fix Minecraft Java Exit Code 1

Source-checked About 15 minutes

Answer

Exit Code 1 is not a diagnosis, so do not delete.minecraft or reinstall Java first. Create a clean Java installation in the official Launcher. If it works, remove custom mods, loaders, or JVM arguments from the failing installation and restore them individually. If it also fails, repair the Launcher and keep the complete error or crash report for support.

Guide steps6 steps
  1. Save the complete failure details
  2. Create an Exit Code 1 test
  3. Isolate the failing profile
  4. Test current supported software
  5. Repair a failing Launcher
  6. Verify or escalate with evidence
  7. If it still does not work

Save the complete failure details

Copy the full Launcher message and note the Minecraft version, installation name, and whether the profile uses Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or other mods. Exit Code 1 alone does not identify the cause.

Create an Exit Code 1 test

Select Minecraft: Java Edition > Installations > New installation. Name it Exit Code 1 test, choose the same game version, select Install, and launch it without mods or custom settings.

Isolate the failing profile

If the clean installation opens, disable the old profile's mods, loader, and custom JVM arguments. Restore one item at a time and launch after each change until the failing item is identified.

Test current supported software

If the clean installation also returns Exit Code 1, install available operating-system and manufacturer graphics-driver updates, close other active programs, restart Windows, and retry.

Repair a failing Launcher

If the Launcher freezes or closes, run the Xbox app's Gaming Services Repair Tool or open Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Minecraft Launcher > Advanced options > Repair.

Verify or escalate with evidence

Success means the clean or corrected profile reaches the Java Edition main menu without Exit Code 1. If it still fails, retain the complete crash report or Launcher output and send it with the completed tests to Minecraft Support.

If it does not work

  • If a clean installation works but the modded one fails, treat it as an installation-level conflict; do not make system-wide Java changes unless the full error names Java.
  • Use Minecraft's memory guide only when the report names a memory error or custom -Xmx settings were previously added.
  • The recorded PrivadoVPN links are disclosed separately for provenance, but a VPN does not repair Exit Code 1.

Minecraft does not publish one universal Exit Code 1 repair; the workflow uses its current clean-installation result to identify installation-level causes.
