Change Your Discord Username or Display Name
Source-checked About 10 minutes
Answer
Change your unique Discord username or separate display name from account settings. A server nickname is a third, server-specific identity, so choose the field that matches where you want the name to appear.
Choose the identity to change
Use Username for the unique account handle, Display Name for the broader profile name, and a server nickname only for one server. Do not change a server nickname when you mean to change the account identity.
Open account settings
In Discord, open User Settings, then My Account. Confirm the account email or profile before editing so you do not change the wrong signed-in account.
Edit the username
Select Edit beside Username, enter the desired available username, then follow Discord’s confirmation request. Availability and rate limits can prevent a particular name from being saved.
Edit the display name
Select Edit beside Display Name, enter the profile name you want, and save it. This does not reserve a unique username or change every server nickname.
Change a server nickname only when needed
Open the relevant server’s profile or member settings and edit the nickname if you have permission. Server owners or role permissions can limit this option.
Verify the result
Check My Account and one representative server after the change. Confirm that the intended field changed and that you did not accidentally modify only the display name or nickname.

If it does not work
- If Discord rejects the username, choose another available compliant name or wait for the shown rate limit; do not use impersonating characters or unofficial name-change tools.
- If a server still shows a different name, check its nickname separately. Discord’s global display name and a server nickname are independent.
