Activate Windows with a digital license or product key

Source-checked About 10 minutes

Answer

Open Activation settings, use the digital license linked to the device or enter a genuine matching product key, then run Microsoft's troubleshooter if activation fails.

Check the starting state

Before changing Windows activation, record the installed edition, Activation status, exact error, genuine product-key or digital-license basis, Microsoft account, and any recent hardware change. Keep the current state, exact message, and any recent change available so each result can be compared.

Choose the supported path

Use the matching digital license or product key and Microsoft's troubleshooter; do not buy unclear keys or use activation scripts.

Check activation status

Open Settings > System > Activation and confirm the installed Windows edition.

Use the assigned license

Connect to the internet and sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the digital license, or choose Change product key and enter a genuine key for that edition.

Run the troubleshooter

If Windows is not activated, use the Activation troubleshooter or Get Help app.

Resolve ownership issues

For hardware changes, organization licenses, or reseller keys, follow Microsoft's reactivation path or contact the administrator or seller.

Verify the result

Windows reports active after restart with the intended edition and linked digital license where applicable. Repeat the original task once more after reopening the relevant app, connection, or Windows session so a temporary result is not mistaken for a fix.

Troubleshoot Windows activation

If the key is blocked or for another edition, the device changed ownership, hardware replacement broke entitlement, or organization licensing applies, stop broad resets and return to the last known state. Preserve the exact error, versions, device or account scope, and failed step before using the linked official support channel.
