Fix Cyberpunk 2077 Random and Startup Crashes on PC

Source-checked About 15 minutes

Answer

Update Cyberpunk 2077, remove old mods, verify the game in GOG GALAXY, Steam, or Epic, and retest the same launch or save. For crashes during play, also disable overlays and return CPU and GPU clock speeds to their defaults. A crash that happens only in one save may require an earlier save; reinstalling the whole game is not the first step.

Guide steps7 steps
  1. Separate a startup crash from a save crash
  2. Update Cyberpunk 2077 and remove mod residue
  3. Verify Cyberpunk 2077 in its launcher
  4. Remove the crash conditions CD Projekt Red names
  5. Clean-install the graphics driver if crashes continue
  6. Repeat the same Cyberpunk 2077 test
  7. Attach Cyberpunk 2077's crash evidence
  8. If it still does not work

Separate a startup crash from a save crash

Start Cyberpunk 2077 once from its normal GOG GALAXY, Steam, or Epic Library button. If the game closes before the main menu and shows "Whoa! Cyberpunk 2077 has flatlined," use the Flatlined launch page. If it closes without that message, continue here. If the menu opens, load the same save and return to the activity that normally crashes; that repeatable point is the test for this page.

Update Cyberpunk 2077 and remove mod residue

Install the current Cyberpunk 2077 update in the launcher before testing. If this installation has used REDmod, manual mods, trainers, or console commands, disabling one launcher toggle may leave modified files behind. Back up %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\CD Projekt Red\Cyberpunk 2077, then follow CD Projekt Red's clean-install instructions and test the fresh game before restoring saves or mods.

Verify Cyberpunk 2077 in its launcher

For GOG GALAXY, open Owned games > Cyberpunk 2077 > Customize > Manage installation > Verify/Repair. For Steam, right-click Cyberpunk 2077 > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. For Epic, select Cyberpunk 2077's three dots > Manage > Verify. Wait for the scan and any replacement download to finish.

Remove the crash conditions CD Projekt Red names

Close Discord, GOG GALAXY, Ubisoft Connect, or another app only when its in-game overlay is enabled, then launch Cyberpunk 2077 again. Return any CPU or GPU overclock or underclock to its default value. Do not add Cyberpunk2077.exe to the firewall or change fullscreen compatibility settings for an offline game crash; those were old video suggestions, not the current publisher workflow.

Clean-install the graphics driver if crashes continue

Open CD Projekt Red's Game crashes page and follow the NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel branch that matches the PC's graphics card. It links the current driver and clean-removal method for each manufacturer. If Cyberpunk 2077 began crashing immediately after a driver update, CD Projekt Red instead advises returning to the previous driver and reporting the regression.

Repeat the same Cyberpunk 2077 test

Launch Cyberpunk 2077 twice and repeat the same save, location, or action that caused the crash. Count the repair as successful only when both launches reach the main menu and the repeatable gameplay point runs without the game closing. If an earlier save works but the latest one always crashes, keep the working save and include both results in a support report.

Attach Cyberpunk 2077's crash evidence

Paste %LOCALAPPDATA%\REDEngine\ReportQueue\ into File Explorer, open the newest dated folder, and attach stacktrace.txt to CD Projekt Red's Game crashes form. Also attach a DxDiag report and say whether ...\Cyberpunk 2077\bin\x64\Cyberpunk2077.exe opens. These files identify this Cyberpunk 2077 crash more clearly than another reinstall.

If it does not work

  • If verification replaces files, do not test until the launcher finishes the follow-up download; the repaired Cyberpunk 2077 installation is not ready while a download is pending.
  • If only one Cyberpunk 2077 save or Night City location crashes, load a save made before the problem. Keep the failing save for CD Projekt Red instead of deleting every save.
  • If the crash changes into the specific Flatlined launch dialog, use the linked Flatlined workflow; if it changes into a missing-script message, remove mods and use CD Projekt Red's clean-install route.
