Protect files and record the error

Back up important files. In Windows Update history, note the update name, KB, error code, and last successful update.

Prepare the computer

Connect power, use stable internet, set date and time automatically, and free storage without deleting unknown system files.

Disconnect nonessential hardware

Unplug external drives, printers, docks, and other accessories not needed for the update. Keep keyboard, mouse, display, and internet connected.

Run the troubleshooter

Open Microsoft's Windows Update troubleshooter through Get Help and follow its recommendations.

Restart and retry once

Choose Restart, return to Settings > Windows Update, and try the same update again.

Use the exact error

Look up the full code and KB on Microsoft Support. If an app or driver is named as incompatible, update or remove only that item.

Repair reinstall as the last software step

If Microsoft offers Fix problems using Windows Update under Recovery, back up and use Reinstall now. It preserves apps, files, and settings while repairing the current Windows version.

If it does not work

If Windows reports a compatibility hold, wait for Microsoft or the hardware maker to clear it instead of forcing installation.
If BitLocker requests a recovery key, retrieve the correct key before continuing.
If the repair option is missing on a managed or older PC, give the KB, code, and Windows version to Microsoft Support or the administrator.
