Record the exact activation state

Determine whether Windows came with the PC, was purchased through Microsoft or a retailer, was upgraded digitally, or is supplied by work or school. Keep the purchase record or organization contact available; do not buy a key from an unverifiable marketplace.
Check edition and account matching
Confirm that the installed edition, such as Home or Pro, matches the digital license or product key. If the license is linked to a Microsoft account, sign in with that account and verify the PC appears in its device list.
Run Microsoft's activation troubleshooter
On the Activation page, choose Troubleshoot when available, or open the activation troubleshooter through Get Help. Follow the result specific to the recorded error instead of running generic licensing commands.
Handle a recent hardware change
If Windows was activated before a major hardware replacement, use the troubleshooter's I changed hardware on this device recently option and select the correct device. Transfer rights depend on the original license type.
Reconnect an organization-managed PC
For a work or school volume license, connect to the organization's required network or VPN and contact its IT administrator. A KMS-managed installation can expire when it cannot reach the organization's activation service; replacing it with an activation script is not a legitimate fix.
