If the right-click menu spins or never opens, restart Windows Explorer first. Then install Windows updates and test a clean boot or remove the most recently added context-menu app. Repair Windows system files only if File Explorer, Start, or other built-in controls are also failing.

Find the affected right-click

Test the desktop, an ordinary folder, and one local file. Note whether all three hang or only a particular file type does.

Restart Windows Explorer

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Windows Explorer in Task Manager, and choose Restart. The taskbar and desktop will briefly disappear.

If Explorer restart does not help, save your work and choose Start > Power > Restart.

Install Windows updates

Open Settings > Windows Update, install pending quality updates, restart if asked, and test the same location again.

Check recently added menu tools

Temporarily disable or uninstall the newest archive, cloud-sync, antivirus, graphics, or shell-customization app, then retest. Reinstall its current version if it was the cause.

Repair Windows files

When other Windows components also fail, open Terminal as administrator and run `DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth`, then `sfc /scannow` after DISM finishes.

Verify each location

Right-click the same desktop, folder, and file again. Re-enable disabled software one item at a time so the cause stays clear.

If it does not work

  • If only network folders hang, test a local folder and reconnect the network location instead of repairing all of Windows.
  • If only one file extension hangs, update or remove the app associated with that file type.
  • Avoid registry-cleaner tools; they can remove unrelated context-menu entries without identifying the failing app.
