Fix a Right-Click Menu That Keeps Loading in Windows 11
Source-checked About 15 minutes
Answer
If the right-click menu spins or never opens, restart Windows Explorer first. Then install Windows updates and test a clean boot or remove the most recently added context-menu app. Repair Windows system files only if File Explorer, Start, or other built-in controls are also failing.
Before you continue
- Test one locationDesktop, folders, and one file type can behave differently.
- Restart ExplorerThis is faster and safer than restarting the whole PC.
- Look for recent additionsArchive, cloud, antivirus, and GPU apps add right-click entries.
If it does not work
- If only network folders hang, test a local folder and reconnect the network location instead of repairing all of Windows.
- If only one file extension hangs, update or remove the app associated with that file type.
- Avoid registry-cleaner tools; they can remove unrelated context-menu entries without identifying the failing app.
