Switch an Instagram Professional Account Back to Personal
Source-checked About 5 minutes
Answer
On Instagram, open your profile, then the menu, Business tools and controls or Creator tools and controls, Switch account type, and Switch to personal account. You will lose professional tools and insights access.
Review what you will lose
Instagram says a switch to a personal account removes access to Meta Business tools and in-app insights. Save or export anything important to your work before you change the account type.
Open your profile
Open the official Instagram app and tap your profile picture in the bottom right. Check the account name at the top if you have multiple profiles signed in.
Open the profile menu
Tap the menu in the top right. If Instagram shows Settings first, open it before looking for the professional account controls.
Open the professional controls
Tap Business tools and controls or Creator tools and controls, depending on your current professional profile type. If that option is not shown, Instagram says to look under Account or Preferences.
Switch the account type
Tap Switch account type, then choose Switch to personal account. Read the confirmation screen instead of accepting it quickly, because the professional tools change immediately.
Confirm and check your profile
Confirm the switch, then return to your profile and check the account type and privacy options. Instagram says previous insights data is retained for 90 days if you later switch back to a professional account.

If it does not work
- If the control is missing, update Instagram and use the Account or Preferences route mentioned in Instagram's help article. Do not share your password with a service that claims it can switch the account for you.
- If you need to make the account private, first confirm that the switch to Personal completed. Professional accounts cannot be private.
- If you change your mind, switching back to a professional account can restore access to preserved insights during Instagram's documented retention period, but review the current prompt before confirming.
