Change Your Steam Profile Name, Custom URL, or Account Sign-In Name
Source-checked About 10 minutes
Answer
Open your Steam Community profile, select Edit Profile, change Profile Name under General, then select Save. This changes the public player name only: Valve says the Steam Account Name used for sign-in and the account's SteamID cannot be changed, even by Steam Support.
Choose the identity you mean
Use Profile Name for the public name other players see. Do not expect this procedure to alter the permanent Steam Account Name used to sign in or the account's numeric SteamID.
Open your Steam Community profile
In the Steam client, select your current profile name and choose View my profile. Confirm the displayed profile, games, and avatar belong to the account you intend to rename.
Change the Profile Name
Select Edit Profile, remain on General, and replace the text in Profile Name. Select Save, then return to the profile and confirm the new public name appears at the top.
Change the Custom URL only if intended
On the same General page, edit Custom URL only when you also want a different Steam Community profile address. Copy the resulting profile URL after saving and confirm it opens your account before sharing it.
Verify from Friends & Chat
Open Friends & Chat and check the name beside your avatar. If another person needs to identify you reliably, share the correct profile link rather than relying only on a changeable, non-account-login Profile Name.

If it does not work
- If Save appears to do nothing, return to Edit Profile > General and confirm the Profile Name field still contains the new text before submitting it once more.
- If you are trying to change the Steam Account Name shown during sign-in, stop: Valve says that field cannot be changed, including by Steam Support.
- If the old public name remains in one open Steam window, reopen that window and verify the main Community profile before repeating the edit.
Sources and verification
Checked against official documentation on . Scope: Windows.
Valve documents that the player name is editable in Profile Settings, while the Steam Account Name and SteamID are permanent; the same page documents the Custom URL field.
