Change Your Steam Profile Name

Source-checked About 2 minutes

Answer

In Steam, select your current profile name > View my profile > Edit Profile. Under General, replace Profile Name and select Save. This changes the public name people see across Steam; your Steam Account Name used to sign in and your SteamID cannot be changed, even by Steam Support.

Guide steps3 steps
  1. Open the correct profile
  2. Change the profile name
  3. Confirm the public result
  4. If it still does not work

Open the correct profile

In the Steam client, select your current profile name and choose View my profile. Check the avatar and games so you do not rename a different signed-in account.

Change the profile name

Select Edit Profile, stay on General, and replace the text in Profile Name. Select Save at the bottom of the page.

Confirm the public result

Return to your Community profile and check that the new name appears at the top. This visible profile name is the result; your sign-in name remains unchanged.

If it does not work

  • If the client will not save the name, confirm that Steam is online and Friends & Chat is signed in, then try Valve's browser editor at https://steamcommunity.com/my/edit/info.
  • If Steam removed a recent profile name, the profile page may show a period during which you cannot change it. Wait for that stated restriction to end instead of repeatedly submitting names.
  • If you are trying to change the Steam Account Name shown during sign-in, stop: Valve says that field cannot be changed, including by Steam Support.
  • If one open window still shows the old public name, reopen that window and check the main Community profile before repeating the edit.
Sources and verification

Checked against official documentation on . Scope: Windows.

Valve documents that the public player name is editable from Edit Profile, while the Steam Account Name and SteamID are permanent. Valve also documents that profile names are public and provides a browser fallback when client editing fails.
