Reduce Pixelation in OBS Streams and Recordings

First compare the OBS preview, a local recording, and the live stream. If the local file is clear but the stream is pixelated, use the streaming service's current bitrate limit and lower output resolution or FPS when the available bitrate cannot preserve fast motion. If the local recording is also pixelated, correct Settings > Video scaling and choose a recording quality or encoder the computer can sustain. More bitrate cannot repair rendering or encoding overload.

Separate source, recording, and stream quality

Use the same fast-moving scene for each test. Compare the OBS preview, a short local recording, and a private or unlisted stream. If the preview is already blurry, correct the capture source first. If only the stream is pixelated, use the stream branch; if the local file is also pixelated, use the recording branch.

Confirm output resolution and FPS

Open Settings > Video. Confirm Output (Scaled) Resolution matches the intended delivery size and Common FPS Values is 30 or 60. Avoid repeated scaling in both Video and Output. A 60 FPS high-motion output needs more resources and more stream bitrate than 30 FPS.

Fix a pixelated local recording

Open Settings > Output. In Simple mode, choose a recording quality other than Same as stream when a separate local recording is required, and select an available hardware encoder if it gives stable results. Make another high-motion recording; do not copy a streaming bitrate into the recording branch.

Fix a pixelated stream

Use the streaming service's current encoder, bitrate, keyframe, resolution, and FPS recommendations. Set a bitrate the service accepts and the connection can sustain with headroom. If that limit is insufficient for fast 1080p60 motion, lower FPS to 30 or reduce Output (Scaled) Resolution rather than exceeding the service limit.

Check rendering, encoding, and network load

Open View > Stats while repeating the same test. Rendering lag means OBS cannot compose the scene in time; encoding lag means the selected output exceeds encoder capacity; network dropped frames apply to streaming. Reduce the matching demand instead of changing unrelated controls.

Verify one measured improvement

Repeat the same high-motion clip twice and inspect it at full size. Success means blocks are reduced without new rendering, encoding, or network frame loss and the destination receives the intended resolution. Keep only the setting change that produced that result.

If it does not work

  • If the preview and local file are sharp but only the platform playback is blurry, wait for processing to finish and compare the platform's received resolution before changing OBS again.
  • If motion is blocky at the service's maximum bitrate, lower FPS or resolution; a bitrate above the service limit is not a reliable fix.
  • If View > Stats shows rendering or encoding lag, simplify the scene or reduce output demand before raising recording quality.
