Crop, Resize, and Rotate Sources in OBS

Source-checked About 10 minutes

Answer

Select the source in the preview, drag handles to resize, hold Alt or Option while dragging to crop, and use Transform for exact values.

Select and preserve the source framing

Select the intended source in the Sources dock, note its current position and size in Edit > Transform > Edit Transform, and lock unrelated sources so a drag does not move the wrong layer.

Select the OBS source

Click the source in the preview or Sources dock. OBS shows a red bounding box around the selected source; sources higher in the list can cover sources below them.

Resize or crop the source

Drag a red corner or edge handle to resize. To crop without altering the source file, hold Alt on Windows or Option on macOS while dragging a handle; OBS turns the cropped edges green.

Set exact transform values

Use Edit > Transform > Edit Transform, or Ctrl+E on Windows and Cmd+E on macOS, when you need repeatable position, size, crop, bounding-box, or rotation values.

Check the scene at output size

Preview the complete scene and make a short local recording. Confirm the source is not clipped, stretched, or hiding another layer and that text and important edges remain inside the output canvas.

Distinguish cropping from stretching

Stretching can distort aspect ratio, cropping hides source pixels without editing the original, and Reset Transform discards manual positioning.

Restore the previous transform

Enter the recorded position, size, crop, and rotation values in Edit Transform, or use Reset Transform only when returning the entire source to its default transform is acceptable.

Video walkthrough

If it does not work

  • If handles behave unexpectedly, unlock the source, check Edit Transform and bounding-box type, then restore recorded values instead of rebuilding the scene.
