In Modern Warfare, open Options > Account > Activision Account > Change Display Name, enter the new name, and confirm. Open the in-game Activision account
Launch Modern Warfare and open Options > Account > Activision Account. Select Change Display Name. The current Activision ID and the available change control appear on this screen.

Enter and confirm the new name
Type the new display name exactly as intended, select Confirm, and approve the token use. If the name is rejected, change the spelling rather than repeatedly submitting the same unavailable or disallowed name.

Use the website if the in-game control is unavailable
Sign in at Activision's account site, open Basic Info, select Edit beside Activision ID, enter the new name, and choose Save. Complete any email or password verification the account page requests.

Verify the new Activision ID
Return to Modern Warfare and open Account or Social. Confirm the new display name is shown with the account's numeric suffix where applicable. Restart the game once if the old cached name remains.
If it does not work
If Change Display Name is disabled, check the token count. Activision does not document a supported way to bypass the six-month token schedule.
If the website asks for an email you cannot access, recover the existing account before attempting another profile change.
If friends cannot find the renamed account, share the complete Activision ID shown in Social, including the # and number suffix.
If the wrong profile appears, stop before saving and sign in to the Activision account that owns the intended Modern Warfare progress.
