How to Remove a Friend in Minecraft

Source-checked About 10 minutes

Answer

In Minecraft: Java Edition 26.2, open Friends from the title screen or pause menu, select the person in the Friends tab, and choose Remove. In Bedrock Edition, open Play > Friends, open the person's profile, and use the remove or unfollow option shown for that Microsoft account. If the control is unavailable, review the signed-in Xbox privacy settings.

Check your Minecraft edition

The menus differ between Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. On the title screen, Java says Java Edition. Bedrock is the version used on consoles, phones, tablets, and Minecraft for Windows.

Remove a friend in Java Edition 26.2

Select Friends on the title screen or pause menu, or press O with the default controls. Open the Friends tab, select the person's profile name, and choose Remove. Confirm the action.

Use the Pending tab for requests

If the person is not yet a friend, open Pending instead. Decline an incoming request or cancel a request you sent. Removing a friend and cancelling a request are different actions.

Remove a friend in Bedrock Edition

Open Play > Friends and open the person's profile. Use the remove friend or unfollow control shown for the Microsoft account, then refresh the Friends list. Xbox now treats friends as two-way connections and followers as one-way connections, so the exact control depends on that relationship.

Check the signed-in Microsoft account

If the name is missing, confirm that Minecraft is using the same Microsoft or Xbox account where the friendship was created. Friends belong to the account, not only to one world.

Review privacy settings if controls are blocked

A child or family-managed account may not be allowed to change every social setting. Sign in to Xbox privacy and online safety with the organizer account when required; do not change a birth date to bypass a restriction.

Restart and verify the result

Close and reopen Minecraft, then check the Friends list again. The other player may still appear in a shared server or Realm member list because membership and friendship are separate.

If it does not work

  • If Java does not show Friends, update Minecraft Launcher and choose Latest Release; the built-in Java Friends List was added in version 26.2.
  • If the person remains in a Realm, the Realm owner must manage that Realm's member list separately.
