How to Remove a Friend in Minecraft
Source-checked About 10 minutes
Answer
To remove a Friend in Minecraft, follow the current owner-supported path below in order. Start with the least destructive checks, preserve account and save data, and verify the result before moving to repair, reinstallation, or support.
Confirm the edition and account permission
Minecraft Bedrock uses Microsoft/Xbox friends; Java Edition does not have the same global Add Friend list and normally uses servers or Realms. Check Minecraft Help and ensure multiplayer and cross-network play are allowed for the account.
Sign into the intended Microsoft account
From Minecraft's main screen, confirm the displayed gamertag belongs to the profile whose friends list should change. If the account is a child or family member, the organizer may need to allow multiplayer and adding friends.
Open the Friends area
Choose Play, then open the Friends tab. To add someone, select Add Friend and search for the person's exact Microsoft/Xbox gamertag. Do not rely only on their Minecraft display name if it differs from the gamertag.
Add or remove the correct profile
For adding, open the matching profile and choose Add Friend or Follow. For removal, open the friend's Xbox profile from the friends list and choose Unfriend or Remove Friend. Read the profile and avatar carefully before confirming.
Handle invitations separately
Adding a friend does not automatically place them in a world. The host must open a multiplayer-enabled world, pause, choose Invite to Game, and select the friend. Console subscriptions and platform privacy settings can still limit online play.
Refresh both accounts
Have both players close and reopen Minecraft after the list changes. Confirm each is online, uses a compatible Bedrock version, and appears in the Friends tab. Sign out only through Minecraft or the platform's official account menu.
Fix a missing or blocked control
Review Microsoft family and Xbox privacy permissions when Add Friend, multiplayer, or invitations are unavailable. Do not create a new age or region profile to bypass restrictions; the account organizer should change the supported permission.

If it does not work
- If the labels differ, update the app or launcher and compare the current Minecraft Help guidance before continuing; do not guess at hidden files, registry values, ports, account links, or security controls.
- If the problem survives a clean supported test, preserve the exact error, timestamp, platform, account region, and completed steps for the product owner's support team instead of repeating destructive resets.
