Record where sign-in fails
Note the exact message and whether it appears at account.microsoft.com, the Windows sign-in screen, Microsoft Store, Office, or another app. These are not interchangeable failures.
Check the account in a browser
Open account.microsoft.com on a trusted device and try the known email, phone, or Skype name once. Confirm spelling and the sign-in method before resetting anything.
Run Sign-In Helper
Use Microsoft's Sign-In Helper with the affected account identifier and follow the result it gives for password, username, verification, or account-status problems.
Use the correct recovery channel
Reset the password only through Microsoft's official flow and choose a code destination you control. Support cannot send a code or change account details for you.
Respect security waiting periods
