For missing GTA V sound, select the correct Windows speaker or headset, then check GTA V's volume controls in Pause Menu > Settings > Audio. For a microphone problem, test the mic in Windows first, allow desktop apps to use it, and enable GTA Online Voice Chat under Pause Menu > Settings > Voice Chat; Rockstar disables Voice Chat by default.
Start GTA V, then select the speaker icon on the Windows taskbar and open the arrow beside the volume slider. Choose the headphones or speakers you can actually hear. Return to GTA V, open Pause Menu > Settings > Audio, and make sure the sound-effects and dialogue controls are not muted.

Test the microphone outside GTA V
Open Windows Settings > System > Sound > Input and select the microphone you intend to use. Choose Start test, speak normally, select Stop test, and play the sample. Continue only when Windows records a clear sample; GTA Online cannot use a microphone that fails this Windows test.

Allow GTA V to use the microphone
Open Windows Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on Microphone access and Let desktop apps access your microphone. GTA V is a desktop app and may not have its own individual switch on this page.

Enable GTA Online Voice Chat
Enter GTA Online, open the Pause Menu, select Settings, scroll to Voice Chat, and set Voice Chat Enabled to On. Rockstar disables this setting by default, so a working Windows microphone can still appear silent until this GTA Online control is enabled.

Test sound and voice separately
First load Story Mode and confirm that dialogue, vehicle, and menu sounds play through the selected device. Then enter a private GTA Online session with a consenting friend and confirm that they hear your voice. This separates a Windows output problem from GTA Online's voice-chat setting.

Match the speaker layout for the Enhanced error
Use this step only when GTA V Enhanced says "Failed to initialize audio hardware." Update the driver from the sound-device or PC manufacturer and make the Windows speaker configuration match the physical setup; for example, select stereo when only two speakers are connected instead of 5.1. Then reopen Enhanced and confirm the error is gone.
If it does not work
If Windows records the microphone but GTA Online does not, recheck Pause Menu > Settings > Voice Chat after joining Online; Voice Chat Enabled is an in-game control, not a Windows volume setting.
If GTA V sound comes from a monitor instead of the headset, switch the Windows taskbar output while GTA V is running, then return to Pause Menu > Settings > Audio and retest dialogue or vehicle sound.
If the microphone test works and Voice Chat Enabled is On but nobody hears you, test with one consenting friend in a private session and note whether the Windows taskbar microphone icon appears while GTA V is using the mic.
