Fix an external hard drive not working in Windows 11

Check the physical connection and then inspect the drive in Disk Management. If Windows sees the disk but it has no letter, assign one; do not initialize, format, or erase a drive that contains files you need.
Check the connection
Reconnect the drive directly to the PC, try a known-good cable or another USB port, and make sure any external power supply is connected. Listen for abnormal sounds but do not repeatedly power-cycle a drive that may be failing.
Open Disk Management
Right-click the Start button and select Disk Management, or search for Create and format hard disk partitions. Locate the external disk by capacity, not only by a drive letter.
Read the disk state
Check whether the disk is Online, Offline, has a healthy volume, or has no drive letter. Do not initialize an existing disk merely because Windows shows an unfamiliar partition style.
Bring an Offline disk online
If the correct external disk is marked Offline, right-click that disk and choose Online. Stop if Windows warns that an action would overwrite or initialize data you need.
Assign a missing letter
Right-click the existing healthy volume, choose Change Drive Letter and Paths, select Add or Change, then choose an unused letter. This can make a recognized volume appear in File Explorer.
Protect the data
If the disk prompts to format, is unallocated unexpectedly, disconnects repeatedly, or makes unusual sounds, stop write operations and use backup or professional recovery advice before repairs.
Verify the result
Open File Explorer, read a few files from the assigned drive, and safely eject it. Record its capacity and status if it remains absent or asks for formatting.

- If the drive is visible but asks to be formatted, do not accept the prompt until you have confirmed that the data is backed up or no longer needed.
- If Disk Management cannot see the drive on multiple ports and computers, focus on the enclosure, cable, power supply, or disk hardware rather than running file-system commands blindly.
