Fix ‘DirectX Setup Could Not Download the File’ on Windows

Answer

Windows 10 and 11 already receive the core DirectX runtime through Windows Update. If Microsoft's small `dxwebsetup.exe` reports that Setup could not download a file, first repair the game's prerequisites; if it still needs legacy D3DX, XInput, or XAudio files, use Microsoft's full DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) package instead of disabling security or downloading individual DLLs. The legacy package does not change the DirectX version shown by `dxdiag`.

Identify which installer failed

Write down the exact error and installer filename. If the message comes from a game or launcher bootstrapper rather than `dxwebsetup.exe`, use that publisher's Verify or Repair command first because it may supply a game-specific prerequisite package.

Install Windows updates

Open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Choose Download & install for available updates and restart if prompted. Windows 10 and 11 update the core DirectX runtime this way; do not search for a separate DirectX 12 installer.

Repair the publisher's prerequisites

Open the game's official launcher and run its Verify or Repair command, then launch the game once. Many older games ship the exact optional DirectX libraries they require even when Windows already reports DirectX 12.

Use Microsoft's full legacy package

If `dxwebsetup.exe` still cannot download files, open Microsoft's DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) Download Center page. Download `directx_Jun2010_redist.exe` and verify both the microsoft.com domain and filename. Do not use a mirror or download an individual DLL.

Extract and run DXSETUP

Run the downloaded file, accept Microsoft's terms, and extract it into a new empty folder you can recognize. Open that folder, run `DXSETUP.exe`, approve the administrator prompt, and wait for completion. Remove only that temporary extracted folder after installation succeeds.

Verify in the original app

Fully close and reopen the game or app that triggered the setup. Success means that app opens or its prerequisite installation completes without the download error. `dxdiag` may still show the same DirectX version because this package adds optional side-by-side legacy components.

If it does not work

  • If the web installer fails but Microsoft's full package succeeds, no firewall exception is needed.
  • If the full Microsoft package will not download, try Microsoft Download Center in another browser or on another network; do not disable Windows Security or use a third-party mirror.
  • If DXSETUP fails after extraction, record its exact code or log and use the game publisher's prerequisite support; this is no longer a web-download problem.
  • If the app still names a missing D3DX, XInput, or XAudio DLL, verify or reinstall that app instead of copying the DLL into System32.
