How to Use ChatGPT Search for Current Web Answers

At chatgpt.com or in the ChatGPT app, open View all tools, select Search, enter a question that needs current information, and send it. ChatGPT may also search automatically; after the answer appears, open its inline citations or Sources panel and verify important claims on the linked pages because web search does not guarantee that every result is complete or correct.
Open a new ChatGPT conversation
Go to chatgpt.com or open the current ChatGPT desktop or mobile app, then start a new chat. Do not paste passwords, private access links, health records, or other unnecessary sensitive data into the prompt.
Select Search
Select View all tools in the composer, then select Search. On interfaces that support shortcuts, type / and select Search; you should see that web search is active before sending the prompt.
Ask a time-specific question
Enter the subject, location or market, and the date range you need, then send the prompt. For example, ask for the latest official release notes as of today rather than only asking what is new.
Confirm that web search ran
Look for inline citations in the answer. If they are not shown, select Sources beneath the response or its action bar; a search-backed answer should expose the pages ChatGPT used.
Check the decisive sources
Open the citation supporting each important date, price, rule, specification, or safety claim. Confirm that the linked page is the right publisher, says what the answer claims, and is current enough for your decision.
Refine the search when evidence is weak
Ask ChatGPT to use a named official site, a narrower date, or the exact document you need, then inspect the new citations. Search is subject to usage limits and may rewrite queries for third-party search providers, so keep sensitive identifiers out of the request.

- If Search is not visible, ask the current-information question normally first because ChatGPT can search automatically. Then try View all tools or the /Search shortcut in a new chat.
- If the answer has no citations or Sources control, do not treat it as verified current research; explicitly request a web search and source links, or check the primary source yourself.
- If a citation does not support the sentence beside it, correct the prompt with the exact disputed claim and require a primary source rather than repeating the original answer.
