Change a Chat Theme on Instagram

Source-checked About 10 minutes

Answer

In the Instagram app, open the conversation, tap the chat name, choose Theme, then select a theme. Chat themes are not available on computers and availability can vary by chat or app version.

Guide steps6 steps
  1. Use the Instagram mobile app
  2. Open the intended conversation
  3. Open the chat details
  4. Open the theme picker
  5. Apply the selected theme
  6. Confirm the intended chat changed
  7. If it still does not work

Use the Instagram mobile app

Open the current Instagram app on an iPhone, iPad, or Android phone and sign in to the account that owns the conversation. Instagram's help centre says this feature is not available on computers.

Open the intended conversation

Tap the messages control and open the one-to-one or group chat whose appearance you want to change. Check the chat name before continuing because a theme change is visible in that conversation.

Open the chat details

Tap the conversation name at the top of the chat to open its settings. If the name is not tappable, update Instagram and check the current in-app chat controls rather than using a browser workaround.

Open the theme picker

Tap Theme and wait for Instagram to show the choices currently available for that conversation. Do not confuse this control with the phone's light or dark appearance setting.

Apply the selected theme

Tap the theme you want, then return to the conversation. The visual change applies to this chat, so other conversations can keep different themes.

Confirm the intended chat changed

Check the conversation name and send no message merely to test the appearance. If the wrong chat was changed, reopen that chat's details and select its previous or another available theme.

If it does not work

  • If Theme is absent, confirm you are using the mobile app, update it, and check whether Instagram offers the feature for that chat and account.
  • If you only want a darker interface, use Instagram's dark-mode guidance instead; a chat theme and app-wide appearance are different settings.
