Change the Email Address on a Facebook Account

Source-checked About 10 minutes

Answer

Add and confirm the new email in Accounts Center, then remove the old address only after the new one works and the correct account is selected.

Confirm access before changing anything

Sign in at Facebook with the account you intend to update. Keep the old email address or another recovery method available until the replacement has been verified; removing the only working contact method can make account recovery harder.

Open Accounts Center

Select your profile picture, then Settings & privacy > Settings. Open Accounts Center, choose Personal details, and select Contact info. In the mobile app, the same controls are available from Menu > Settings & privacy > Settings > Accounts Center.

Add the new email address

Choose Add new contact > Add email. Enter an address you control, select the correct Facebook account if Accounts Center lists more than one account, and continue. Check the spelling carefully before requesting the confirmation message.

Confirm the address

Open the message Facebook sends to the new inbox and enter its confirmation code when prompted. Check Spam or Junk and request a new code if the first one expires; do not share the code with anyone.

Test the new sign-in method

Sign out only after confirmation, then verify that the new email and current password can sign you back in. This test protects against deleting a working address before the replacement is usable.

Remove the previous address if appropriate

Return to Contact info, select the old email, and choose Delete email address only if it is no longer needed. Keep another verified recovery method on the account and review any security alert generated by the change.

If it does not work

  • If the confirmation message does not arrive, recheck the spelling, Spam folder, and selected account before requesting another code. If the new address confirms but cannot sign in, keep the old verified contact and use Facebook's account-recovery guidance before removing anything.
