Fix Borderlands 3 Not Launching or Crashing on PC

Source-checked About 10 minutes

Answer

Start by noting whether Borderlands 3 fails before its menu or crashes after loading. Restart the launcher, install current game and Windows updates, check the PC requirements, and test once with overlays and other nonessential programs closed. Update the graphics driver and use the launcher's cache or file-repair option before considering a reinstall.

Guide steps6 steps
  1. Identify where the launch fails
  2. Restart the store launcher
  3. Check requirements and updates
  4. Close programs that can interfere
  5. Update the graphics driver
  6. Repair before reinstalling
  7. If it still does not work

Identify where the launch fails

Open Borderlands 3 once and note whether nothing happens, a message appears, the game closes before the menu, or it crashes after a save loads. Keep the exact message and time. These are different symptoms, so use the same point in the launch as the test after each change.

Restart the store launcher

Exit Steam or the Epic Games Launcher completely, restart Windows, then open the launcher and Borderlands 3 again. Current copies should not require the retired 2K Launcher; do not install an old 2K Launcher download to fix startup.

Check requirements and updates

Compare the PC with Borderlands 3's current store requirements. Install pending Borderlands 3, launcher, and Windows updates, restart when requested, and test again before changing security settings.

Close programs that can interfere

For one test, close nonessential overlays, recording tools, hardware monitors, VPN software, and overclocking utilities. An overlay draws information over the game and can conflict with how a game starts. Keep antivirus and the firewall enabled unless their own alert names the game.

Update the graphics driver

Install the current driver for the installed NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics adapter from that manufacturer, then restart. Do not use a generic driver-download site or install a driver for a different adapter.

Repair before reinstalling

Use the store launcher's cache-clear or file-verification option and let it finish. If the crash remains, collect the exact error plus DxDiag and MSInfo for 2K Support. Reinstall only after confirming cloud or local saves are protected.

If it does not work

  • If the game reaches the menu with overlays closed, restore one background program at a time until the conflict is identified.
  • If the PC is below the current minimum requirements, file repair and repeated reinstalls will not make unsupported hardware compatible.
