Do not install BetterDiscord to customize Discord. It is an unauthorized client modification, while Discord's current Terms prohibit unauthorized software designed to modify the service. Use User Settings > Appearance for official themes and layout controls, User Settings > Accessibility for readability controls, or the App Directory for reviewed server functions.
Decide what you actually want to change: color or layout, readability, profile appearance, or a server function. BetterDiscord alters the client itself, so do not download its installer or enter Discord credentials, tokens, or authentication codes into a modification or plug-in.

Use Discord's official appearance controls
On desktop, select the cogwheel beside your username, then Appearance. Choose a documented Theme, UI Density, Chat Message Display, Zoom Level, or Chat Font Scaling control and confirm the preview or interface changes. On mobile, tap your avatar, tap the cogwheel, then Appearance; the available theme choices differ from desktop.

Use Accessibility for readability changes
Open User Settings > Accessibility. Adjust only the relevant supported control, such as saturation, reduced motion, high contrast, role-color display, or text-to-speech rate. Confirm the affected text or animation changes before leaving settings.

Use an app for a server function
On desktop or in a browser, select the server name > Server Settings > App Directory. Open an app's Overview and privacy information, select Add App only if the function and developer are acceptable, review every requested permission, then Authorize. Most server apps require ownership or Manage Server and remain third-party services even when discovered through Discord.

Verify the supported result
Restart or reopen only the relevant Discord screen and confirm the chosen setting remains active. For a server app, test one harmless command as a normal member and confirm that it can perform only the intended action. Stop if the requested permissions or visible result differ from the app's current Overview.
If it does not work
If BetterDiscord is already installed, do not add more plug-ins while diagnosing a problem. Use its publisher's removal process, then download or use Discord only through Discord's official site or app-store listing and confirm the unmodified client opens normally.
If you entered a Discord password or authentication code into an untrusted installer or plug-in, change the password from a clean device, review User Settings > Authorized Apps, and remove access you do not recognize.
If an official appearance option is missing, confirm whether the article marks it as Nitro-only, platform-specific, or experimental. Do not install a client modification to force an unavailable option.
If a server app asks for broader permissions than its task requires, cancel authorization and choose a lower-risk method. Discord states that app developers operate their own services and data practices.
