Fix “Sign Out Is Not Available Due to Restrictions” on iPhone
Source-checked · About 10 minutes
Answer
If iPhone says sign-out is unavailable due to restrictions, turn off the Screen Time passcode in Settings > Screen Time > Change Screen Time Passcode. A child or teen needs their parent or guardian to make the change.
1
Confirm the exact restriction
Open Settings, tap your name, and check the message beside Sign Out. Apple treats “Sign out is not available due to restrictions” differently from an Apple Account name that is greyed out on the main Settings screen.
2
Turn off the Screen Time passcode
For the sign-out restriction message, go to Settings > Screen Time, scroll down, and tap Change Screen Time Passcode. Tap Turn Off Screen Time Passcode and enter that passcode.
3
Use Account Changes only for a greyed account
If your name is greyed out on the main Settings screen instead, open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. Under Allow Changes To, tap Accounts and choose Allow.
4
Use the family organizer for a child's device
When the iPhone belongs to a child in Family Sharing, the parent or guardian may need to open the child's Screen Time settings from the organizer's device and allow Account Changes. Do not guess or bypass the organizer's Screen Time passcode.
5
Recover a forgotten Screen Time passcode
Open Settings > Screen Time > Change Screen Time Passcode > Forgot Passcode, when available, and authenticate with the Apple Account used to configure it. Organization-managed restrictions cannot be recovered through this personal route.
6
Sign out only after reviewing consequences
Once Sign Out is available, return to Settings > your name > Sign Out. Before confirming, review which synced data will remain on the iPhone and make sure anything important is available elsewhere.
If Accounts is already set to Allow, check whether Family Sharing or a work or school management profile controls the device. Use the organizer or administrator route; do not erase the iPhone or bypass a Screen Time passcode merely to expose Sign Out.
