Change a Composition Background in After Effects

Answer

For a dependable background that behaves like footage in renders and nested compositions, create a composition-sized Solid and place it below every visible layer. Composition Settings > Background Color changes the composition background, but a nested composition becomes transparent unless it contains a background layer.

Choose the composition to change

Open the composition in the Timeline and Composition panels. Decide whether the final result must be opaque; if the export requires transparency, do not add a full-frame background layer.

Create a composition-sized Solid

Choose Layer > New > Solid. Enter a descriptive name, select the Color swatch, choose the background color, select Make Comp Size, then select OK.

Place the Solid behind the content

In the Timeline, drag the Solid below every layer that should appear in front of it. Confirm its eye icon is enabled and its in and out points cover the full composition duration.

Verify the visible background

Move the playhead through the composition and turn the Transparency Grid on once. The Solid should fill the frame while foreground transparency, masks, and blending remain visible.

Render a short test

Render a short representative range with the intended output settings, then open the file outside After Effects. Confirm the chosen color reaches every edge and no foreground layer was hidden.

Use Composition Background Color only for its limited role

To change that setting, choose Composition > Composition Settings, open Basic, and select Background Color. Adobe notes that this background becomes transparent when the composition is nested, so use the Solid method when the color must survive nesting.

If it does not work

If the result is still transparent, confirm the Solid's eye icon is enabled, its in and out points cover the rendered frames, and it is inside the composition being exported.
If a nested composition loses its color, add the Solid inside that nested composition rather than relying on Composition Background Color.
If the Solid covers other content, move it to the bottom of the Timeline; do not change every foreground layer's opacity or blending mode.
If alpha transparency is required, disable or remove the Solid and verify the output module is configured to include alpha.
